“Breathe: Healthy Steps to Living Tobacco Free” is a program funded by the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission (TPC). Throughout this website we will simply refer to the program as Breathe.
The purpose of this website is to provide TPC funded partners with access to information, training, and resources that will help them successfully meet their grant deliverables associated with the Tobacco Free Families Indicator/Breathe.
What exactly is Breathe?
Breathe is a tobacco education program managed by Health Ed Pros with funding from TPC and includes a wealth of resources developed by McMillen Health. The purpose of Breathe is to train staff at organizations serving Hoosier families, including Head Start centers, about the impact of secondhand and thirdhand smoke and the importance of smoke/vape free environments for their children. All Breathe trainings and materials are offered free of charge to eligible partners and provide training participants with practical tools to work with families to create healthy environments for their children. Check out the Breathe Promo Video for a brief overview of this program.
Please note: The Breathe curriculum is research-based and fact-based, meaning that it was developed using the latest research findings and empirical evidence to ensure the information provided is accurate and up-to-date. While the Breathe curriculum incorporates best practices and promising strategies, it is important to note that it has not undergone the rigorous testing required to be classified as evidence-based. We are continuously seeking new research and feedback to improve and update Breathe to ensure it meets the highest standards of effectiveness and quality.
What support is available for Breathe?
Health Ed Pros receives funding from TPC to implement the Breathe program in unfunded counties and to provide technical assistance to funded partners to implement Breathe in their respective counties. This map shows the Indiana counties where a Funded Partner is working on Tobacco Free Families/Breathe in the 2023-2025 grant cycle. A critical source of technical assistance and guidance can be found on this website.

*Special Note: Due to the design and distribution method of Breathe surveys, the reported percentages are somewhat limited in their ability to describe the actual tobacco-related beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors among staff members of the organizations trained as well as the parents/guardians surveyed. The main purpose of the Breathe data is to serve as an internal evaluation tool for our funded partners and the organizations utilizing Breathe. Statistics should not be shared with the general public.
