Vaping & E-Cigarettes

E-cigarettes, also called vapes, have become popular in recent years, especially among youth.  While these products are sometimes marketed as a ‘healthier alternative’ to cigarettes, they are far from safe. Vapes and e-cigarettes have many of the same harmful chemicals that are found in traditional cigarettes and may have even higher levels of nicotine.

The harmful chemicals are often masked by sweet flavors. Because vapes can come in fun colors and fruity flavors, they may appeal to young children. It is important to make sure these products are kept away from curious little ones!

The following resources can help you be informed about the dangers of vaping.

Breathe Resources about Vaping and E-cigarettes

What exactly is vaping? Check out this short video for important facts about vaping.

E-cigarettes do NOT emit harmless water vapor! This vapor is actually an aerosol that contains many of the same chemicals as smoking a traditional cigarette. This handout provides more facts about vaping.

Nicotine poisoning can happen when children come in contact with products that contain high amounts of nicotine, such as vape products.

E-liquids, commonly sold with vape products, can be poisonous for young children, and the batteries in e-cigarettes can explode. When it comes to your child’s safety, it is important to keep any products containing nicotine out of their reach!

Use this worksheet to develop a plan to keep your child safe.

Secondhand Smoke

Vape products emit an aerosol that can be harmful to others who are around someone who is vaping (known as secondhand vapor). If you would like to know more, please check out our secondhand smoke page!

Vaping and Pregnancy

Vaping can be dangerous for a developing baby as the harmful chemicals can be passed directly from the mother to the baby. To learn more about smoking/vaping and pregnancy, check out our pregnancy page.

Teens and Vaping

Vape products are marketed heavily towards kids and teens. It is important to talk with your kids so they are aware of the dangers of these products. This worksheet can help guide your conversation about vapes with your teen!

Ready to Quit?

Are you or someone in your life ready to quit vaping? This worksheet can help identify what can be gained by ditching these products!

Quitting vaping can be hard, but there are resources to help, such as Quit Now Indiana. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW and learn more about quitting here.
