Steps to Complete BEFORE Conducting Each Breathe Training
- Educate the organization’s leadership about the staff training for Breathe.
This will be a significant part of your initial conversation and/or meeting with the organization. Impress upon them the importance of their staff having the skills and resources to address the difficult topic of tobacco with the families they serve. Let them know that 90-120 minutes are needed for the Initial Breathe training. This will allow their organization to receive the free Breathe kits (including access to the For Partners webpage with all the online resources) and ensure their staff knows how to use these valuable resources.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you are not able to secure at least a 90 minute training session do not pass up the opportunity to present to their staff. However, make it clear to the leadership that you will not be able to provide the Breathe kits without conducting a full training. Use this opportunity to provide some education on tobacco and a teaser about the Breathe kits, using the Breathe-Teaser 7-30-24 (updated). Ideally, this will encourage them to allocate time in the future for a full Breathe training.
- Set the date for the training and begin to gather details.
Agree upon a date, time, and location for the training or if the training will be virtual, and allow AT LEAST 2 weeks to prepare for the training and to order Breathe kits. Additional information to gather from the partner includes the number of staff who will attend the training, their titles/roles, the number of centers/buildings that will be represented, and whether or not you will have access to a computer, projector, and speakers.
SPECIAL NOTE: We believe that all staff members have an opportunity and unique touchpoints for reaching families with tobacco education, so encourage the organization’s leadership to include as many types of staff (teachers, aides, home visitors, administrators, bus drivers, nutrition services, etc.) as possible in the Breathe training.
- Notify Health Ed Pros of your training and order Breathe kits, if needed.
Using the information collected in Step 2, share the training details at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TrainingNotification NEW!!
Submit your training notification/kit request as soon as possible, preferably a MINIMUM of 2 weeks prior to your scheduled training. If you request Breathe kits with less than two weeks’ notice please understand that they likely will not arrive in time.
Breathe kits currently include a bag, flip chart, parent activities booklet, and a children’s activities booklet. The parent handouts, parent journal/worksheets, coloring book/pages, and Spanish materials are available in digital formats only. Download and print these items yourself and/or share these resources with partners (after they have completed the Initial Breathe training) using the direct link to the FOR PARTNERS webpage. You may also order both flat and clip Breathe magnets at the link above.
SPECIAL NOTE: Because resources are limited and we do not want kits to sit on the shelf and not be utilized, we are not able to provide a Breathe kit to every training participant. A general rule of thumb would be to provide 1 kit to your site contact as well as 1 kit for every 5 training participants. Depending on the structure of the organization, you may need to provide more kits to ensure every building has a kit. Use this as a guide and be prepared to provide your rationale for the number of kits you are requesting.
- Personalize the PowerPoint and practice your presentation.
Use the Initial-Breathe-Training-Powerpoint-7-23-24 and be sure to update the PowerPoint to include your name and contact information. You should also add some local stats or background information about the community and your partnership on the Local Community slide. Then run through the presentation several times to ensure you are ready to lead the training and feel confident with the material. Each slide includes a notes section that indicates the key point to convey and a suggested script as well as materials needed, instructions for activities, and how to modify the training for a virtual format, if needed. Try to anticipate questions that might arise, and be prepared with some responses. Watch this video to see a Breathe Training in action. (updated video coming soon!)
- Gather all the materials you will need.
Click here for tips on conducting a Breathe training, including all the materials you will need and links to several important documents. Some documents will need to be printed so allow adequate prep time, especially if you need to use an outside printing service.
- Confirm training details with the organization 3-5 days before the training.
Check-in with your main contact at the organization about 3-5 days prior to the training. Ensure they are ready for the upcoming training and confirm all logistical details, including the anticipated number of participants. If you will be conducting the training virtually, be sure to share the link to Zoom (or your preferred virtual format) with the organization’s leadership or directly to the attendees if you were given a registration list.
